A useful "litmus test" for things like music, books and games is found in a couple of verses in 1 Corinthians:

All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. (1 Corinthians 6:12)

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. (1 Corinthians 10:23)

The phrase "All things are lawful for me" refers to our liberty in Christ. It's not wrong, in and of itself, to listen to music, read something and so on. The word expedient means useful or profitable. So, when you come across a piece of music you want to listen to, or book you want to read, or suchlike, one thing to ask yourself would be, "Is this useful or profitable"? Am I making wise use of my time with this? Is it of any real benefit to me? Especially spiritual? Then you want to consider whether the thing is addictive. That's what being brought under the power of something means. I've had to give up a lot of games because I was under their power. I have also given up TV programmes because I was either addicted to them or decided that they really weren't expedient (I was feeding my flesh with them, but they were not otherwise useful or profitable and ultimately a waste of time). Rock music is unquestionably addictive (because of the sensual beat in particular). So aside from its evil doctrines, that is one major reason to avoid it. A particularly relevant question concerning music is whether it is edifying. Godly music, like sound preaching, is edifying. Most secular music is not edifying, and most of it is also harmful from a spiritual standpoint. Classical music is not too bad (that's only my opinion though). It doesn't overtly promote anything evil, and it has a focus on melody and harmony, whereas modern rock is all about the beat. So for example, listening to Beethoven's Fifth won't really edify you, because it's not designed to glorify or worship God. But it won't otherwise do you any harm, because there are no lyrics teaching wicked doctrines. So listening to something like that is unlikely to be sinful (but again, that's only my opinion, although I'm trying to judge the matter as Biblically as I can).

Sometimes though, whether something is sinful or not depends on the circumstances. For example, if you listen to a piece of classical music as something in the background while you're doing housework, I see nothing wrong with that. But if you listen to that same piece of music when you should be doing something else (e.g. if you sit down to concentrate on the music and don't do some other task you need to do), then it would be sinful. However, that's maybe digressing a bit too much from your question.

Another important thing is that if you believe something is sin, or you're not sure, it would be better not to do it. Consider this passage:

Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin. (Romans 14:22-23)

So if you find yourself doubting or condemning yourself when you're listening to a piece of music, best to refrain. Hope this has been of some assistance.

   Hello again, first up i wanna apologize to Mr. Johnson if ive ever annoyed him with my  response.i didnt quite understood what he meant rhe first time when he meant to give Examples of media. But to answer his question im going to keep it simple and say :
"The Alphabet Song" (A,B,C...) for music, and Snowwhite or films (a disney film with the witch being the villain,not hero)

As for Rowan, thank you for your response because it really hits the nail on the head on my Question. You made good biblical points thatll help me make informed decisions on what media i shall consume

I can't answer that question unless you point to a specific sin in the Bible that you are referring to.

  Okay, um, allow me to narrow/clarify... would it be a Sin to enjoy a nonworship song(or any media )as long as it  doesnt:
A) promote lewdness, Hatred, or any other sin
B)has a message that doesnt go against scripture

Like would that be idolatry in anyway? Would that be worldliness ? A waste of time?

Christian Music: For The Love of Money

Hello Mr Johnson, i just finished reading your book in its entirety, and i must say its a very eye-opening read about the corruptions and problems going on in the Christian music industry.

So many singers traded out the full biblical message of  scripture, for cheap feel-good worship songs that focus on  self achievement/ self empowerment  rather than actually glorifying God. Largely in part because its what sells and top the charts...and  these people had (sadly) made an idol out of earthly fame and fortune. It is therefore no surprise why so many of them end up admitting to be atheists all this time.

I also hate he hypocritical statements by these singers who claim to Love Christ, but actively idolize  and give honor  to people who are vocal haters of God (such as Marilyn Manson, Kurt Cobain, Aleister Crowley).

And i think i finally understand why certain genres are ultimately incompatible for spreading the Word of God, and trying to blend the two styles would ultimately be worthless
( The same way one ought not play a party dance  popsong for a solemn funeral).

Ultimately, the worship songs we must support and listen should line well with doctrine first, before "sounding good" and i truly appreciate the time and effort you make into making it available for us.

That being said, this book still did left me with a couple of  questions i hope to be answered:

Would it be a sin to enjoy listening to  secular /non-worship songs (and by extension , watching movies/reading books) , as long as it doesnt promote sin or  a message that goes against  what the bible teaches?

Right now, I can tell you've reached that point where you have to understand the difference between paganism and liberty. You're probably reading/listening to some people who are going overboard because I've heard some of this before. For example, I had a guy rant and rail on me pretty hard, telling me I'm a devil from hell, because we were taking care of a puppy who was rescued off the street. So if "cat-owning" was pagan, you're essentially having to say that God said, "I have created cats, but if you keep one in your household, I will destroy you." Really?

Another example, there is a huge difference between stretching and yoga. Stretching is something that even animals do because God designed us in a way that we need to stretch out muscles, but yoga is a bunch mysticism nonsense. You can stretch without doing yoga; that is possible, and people have been doing it for thousands of years. If you keep going down the road you're going, you're going to end up getting on your knees to ask forgiveness for stretching your arms when you yawn.

I just wanted to give you that heads up before you keep going. A few years ago, Eric Hovind tried to use an argument on me to defend in pagan worship of Christmas, and I think this will help make it more clear. He said his celebration of Christmas was no different than our use of the words Thursday or Saturday, Thursday being named after the pagan god Thor, and Saturday being named after the pagan god Saturn--this was in effort to accuse me of doing the same thing he was doing to make me into a hypocrite for rebuking him.

The problem with his argument is this: I do not honor Christmas with a celebration and rituals, just like I do not honor Thursday with a celebration and rituals. On the flip side, I did not accuse him of worshiping Thursday because I have no evidence that he honors it with celebration and ritual, but I DO have evidence that he celebrates and ritualizes Christmas.

Just for a clarification of definition:

worship (v): to adore; to pay divine honors to; to reverence with supreme respect and veneration; to respect; to honor; to treat with civil reverence; to honor with extravagant love and extreme submission; as a lover

Hello sir! A bit of late follow up to the question.
Ive been meaning to ask if its a sin for a christian to listen and enjoy  contemporary secular music or nonworship songs. And im not talking about songs that outright promote sin or lewdness-im taking about songs about Romantic love,  friendship, melancholy or adventure/nature.

Ive seen alot of discussion about music and music genre lately (in youtube) and i see alot of people giving out their personal preferences rather than actually basing on scripture.

Theres also this whole discussion about "backbeats" and how it is derived from voodoo rituals , and how it influenced  most modern music genres. Should we stick to Old time Hymns?

 I would also like to clarify that rock/metal/ jazz  is not one of my favorite genres, so im asking this out of genuine curiosity and concern (and not because im actively seeking loopholes to justify wrongdoing, whatsoever)

I would also like to formally thank you for answering my questions, something i never got to do the first time.

I wanna begin with saying that i agree that Christians really cant just take what is wicked, and repurpose it for God. Which is why us believers ought not to celebrate the widely observed holidays (Valentines, Halloween, Christmas). Afterall, we are told to not learn the way of the Heathens.

Im shocked to find out  that  alot of the stuff we do, ( not just holidays n superstitions) are  not only  pagan in origin , but  were also used for their religious purposes. This makes me question if its acceptable for a christian to Surf (polynesian ),  Painting/Cat-owning (egyptian) ,  Algebra (Babylonian) ,  or perform in Stage Theatre ( Ancient Greek). What really upsetted me was finding out Origami was used in religious ceremonial purposes (i love to fold paper as a hobby, as well as  drawing)

Which brings me here; does something being pagan in origin, make it inherently sinful?

That being said, Despite my initial disappointment, i am ready to give up such evil ways for the Lord when absolutely necessary.

I would agree with you on that. Certainly, a lot of video games are based around mythological fiction and promoting all kinds of very demonic stuff. About Disney movies, they are in some ways more dangerous than an obviously evil thing like say, Dungeons and Dragons, because they're subtle (although they're less subtle than they used to be). They disguise a lot of their wickedness by dressing it up as something "cute" or "funny". For example, the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella is a witch, but she's also this sweet little old lady who sings cute songs with silly words. Thus is an evil thing made to look sweet and innocent. Mary Poppins is another witch when you consider all the things she does. But she's so pretty and sings lovely songs, and so you get all warm and fuzzy feelings and don't consider how much evil is really going on. Incidentally, there is a song in the Mary Poppins movie that includes a lyric which sums up the Disney method. The lyric is: "A little spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down in the most delightful way". Disney makes their wicked "medicine" palatable by coating it in "sugar" (sometimes a lot more than a spoonful!). The "sugar" includes all those sweet songs we remember, and the cute cartoon characters, and the comedy (or sometimes the drama). How delightful all of that is to our flesh! They form a very effective "dressing" for the poisonous "medicine" that Disney is actually serving up. Other animation companies like Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera do this stuff too, but Disney is particularly effective at it.

Video games too can sometimes have a certain amount of "sugar" that helps to "sweeten" the wickedness in them. Some are even quite literally sugary, such as Candy Crush! I'm not sure if there is any witchcraft being promoted in Candy Crush (I've never played it), but I know enough about it to know it can be as addictive as any other game, and I think it is designed to be that way too (the more you play, the more money the manufacturers make - that's why they want to keep you hooked as much as possible).

To DMac, what you say about "getting very angry" is a problem I used to have with Madden Mobile and FIFA Mobile. It's one reason why I quit them in the end. Some things in these games are designed to be really difficult, but there's a trick with that. The manufacturers want you to spend money to make your "path" easier. Spend $100 to instantly unlock the prize you otherwise have to play ten really hard and frustrating games for! I imagine in shooter games, the catch would be to spend money to upgrade your weaponry. Getting killed all the time in battles? Blow your opponents away with this super-advanced machine gun! All yours for only fifty bucks! Or get $5 off the price by doing this special challenge. I can easily see something like that in shooter games. (Correct me if I'm wrong though.) So you end up getting sucked into spending insane amounts of money or insane amounts of time to get the next prize or advance to the next level. And even if your favourite game is not directly promoting witchcraft or the occult, if it is still producing evil fruit (like angry outbursts), then it is definitely something to remove from your life. If there is no definite bad fruit, and some benefit is being gained, then it might be OK, but still treat with caution, because even the most benign game (like say, a Bible trivia quiz game) has the potential to become addictive if you let it.

I have some material to share on this topic. Although that may be for another time.
I got rid of my game console. The final straw that convicted me to get rid of it all was when I looked very closely at the weaponry in the game and saw that they were all stamped with a pentagon. I knew I had no place to hide, repented, and got rid of the thing as quickly as I could. The benefits are amazing.

What is the True biblical defintion of "Effeminate"?

1Cor 6:9
"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind..."

"Malakoi" is  a word that is often gets left out in most modern new-age translations, often merged with "Arsenokoitai"  to refer to both the Passive and Active participants in a homosexual relationship

Older translations translations translate it as "Wantons" or " Weaklinges".
"Malakoi" in its simplest form means "Soft". As in Soft clothing, or a Soft pillow.
And  "Malakoi" being listed alongside other sexual sins in the bible can give us a clue that it is  a form of sexual deviation.

I have encountered vastly diferring opinions and ideas througout my search, and im honestly becoming confused.

My Question is : What does it really mean to be Effeminate? What is it like?

Sure you have the very obvious transgenders, Drag  Queens and Transvestites. Men who purposely blurs the lines of Gender by wearing excessive makeup, Gowns,  Sassy-talking, and is basically a stereotypical Homosexual (minus the act of intercourse).

But i notice modern cultural ideas  have also creeped in. Ive heard Baptist Pastors Literally yell  that men shouldnt wear pink clothing.  Despite Pink being feminine is  a fairly recent concept.
  Tim Bayly , a reformed pastor, called a Man "effeminate for donning a "hipster" look ; Cuffed Sleeves, Thick Framed Glasses,  An Ascot and Skinny Jeans . 
 
This makes me wonder: Is Lack of Athleticism effeminate? Is Crying over a Sad movie a  bad thing? Is a man being interested to music, arts,  and cooking something to be repented of? Kilts? Shaving? Perfume?

Its so easy to simply call it as " a man who acts like a woman" , but to where we draw the line?

Another interesting definition i read about is "Moral Weakness". These men have no sense of responsibility. They are vain, luxurious, addicted to worldly pleasures and lazy. These men are cowards who cant stand up for the truth, nor their families. They are worthless and unproviding. They have no Self control.  (these MAY probably have sexual connotstions too, hence why Malakoi was translated as "Wantons" in some older versions...

As you can see, im just barely scratching the surface in this issue and i still have a few follow ups to ask. But right now, I would really need hear your thoughts, Biblical-based opinions on this

Hello everyone! i would like to begin by saying that i solemnly agree that Christians really shouldnt use statues, or images of any kind to worship God. And it is absolutely wrong to represent and limit our almighty God to mere symbols (such as the cross, triquetra, and fish) .It is a direct violation of the second commanent to not Make and Bow down to Graven images (giving religious significance to a symbol, being "bowing down" to it)

So the other day, i was scrolling online when i encountered a Hebrew Roots Creator saying that Christians must get rid of any type of "graven" images that represent any living thing. Whether it be Barbie dolls, Stuffed animals, fake plants and decorative figurines

Is this right?  Is any form of 3d object in the house a form of idolatry?

As a follow up question, would drawing scenes from the bible, depicting the life of Jesus would be a form of idolatry too? I get the error of creating portraits that are meant to depict Jesus, putting them on an Altar, Ascribing religious significance and praying to it. But would having a painting of a scene from his life okay, or is the same sin? Howabout simply drawing/painting in particular?

That does make me ask, is repentance a one time event? Is it a process, or something i have to do constantly ? What happens if i still sin?  If we constantly sin, does that mean we have to Grieve and Wept (repent) for our sins all the time?

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Which is not to say that we are abandoning the principles (i.e. first teachings) of Christ, but that we have established them, and then go on to more complex things and greater responsibilities. One of those principles is the foundation of repentance, which is a foundation laid in our hearts.

There are sheep that go astray, but if they have come to repentance and faith at any point, they are still sheep. However, Jesus has to go get them.

Hey Elissa, sorry my late response.

To answer your earlier question, at first my family was really glad when i told  them im a believer again, but the more time passes, they  noted how more "paranoid" or
"extreme" i got.

 My older brother really likes The Lord of the Rings. we know its full of dark symbolism. Though he says he's mature enough to discern the evil stuff, he's only in it for the  Characters, and he's not going to practice  witchcraft in real life anyways.

 And even though i already warned her, my mom is still very into celebrating Christmas, and i fear that these will damn them both to hell.


(I really wanna focus the point on my brother for a bit. Most of the concern regarding fantasy is rightfully aimed at children and Teens because of their sensitve, Malleable minds that can be negatively influence them.
Look how so many Teens got lead to Celebrity Idolization, and Witchcraft by their obsessions .But my brother is a mature adult now. Is it inherently sinful to like stories with magic in it?)

Granted, i do not know their hearts if theyre  actual believers or not, or if theyve truly repented in the past. I just trust on God to convict them where it is necessary. And I do hope  these wont  send them both to hell (if theyre truly believers)🙏

Ramie, the only thing that will send people to hell is a lack of repentance and belief on the Lord Jesus Christ. Liking fantasy novels or celebrating pagan holidays is no different to any other sin. If these worldly things were what actually condemned someone to hell, then we would be saved by works, not by grace, and that is NOT what Jesus taught. If your family members are truly saved, then the Holy Spirit will convict them sooner or later to stop doing these things. If they're not saved, then simply stopping those practices is not enough to save them. The only way anyone can be saved is through the type of repentance that you have experienced, and once that happens, then NOTHING will change that.

Jeanne (and this is open to everyone else) , i do have some few final questions if you dont mind...

What if they are born again, But died without fully letting go of all their sins? For example,  my Mom dies before getting convicted of Christmas (hopefully not!).

I must admit one more thing. Before i was saved, i was  super in to Harry Potter and Netflix's Sabrina.  And not  for the characters and story, but i was literally "hooked" by the portrayal of magic,  and nearly made me want to actually practice it.
  Now of course,  we know Witchcraft is forbidden and i have sinced stop liking these shows (tried watching it again, but the enjoyment factor is  drastically gone).

  But you see, i really still do like learning about World Mythology ,  studying History, and even the occasional Fairytale with fantastical elements. Not to learn witchcraft, or to convert to false religions, but simply for the Stories of it ?

 And so far, i have not been convicted of this. Should i be concerned? Should i be wary of this? Should i also just move to a new interest?
 This is a very similar issue to Chris' Video Game article, and i brought it out to be open with yall.

YES. I actually already read Chris' article on repentance ! (quite a lengthy read, but absolutely worth it)

 I for the longest time wrongly thought that repentance is a work you have to do to get saved. And its as simple  as Changing your mind, Turn from doing that sin, and then Never do that sin again. Sounds easy Right?
 
    Well that way of thinking frustrated me, because  i keep on falling for the same sins over and over again. In my mind, i was having this false guilt whispering:  "Oh, youre not repenting Enough!" . Or that i should "Try Harder" to change my mind , so my works would show how much ive actually repented.
 
What really stuck to me was near the end of the article, he mentioned how some of us have already repented  ,we just didnt realize at the time.
 
Thats EXACTLY what happened to me . I came in the article feeling nervous to know the truth of repentance , only to find out, oh i already did repented.

 As for your question, syncretism is when a religion mixes its  beliefs/theology/Deities with another religion.  Similar to how Santeria is a mixture of Roman Catholicism+African  Yoruba mythology. My country has tons of those. Particularly with Mother Mary and the Saints

Hello everyone, My name's Ramie, 19 yo, and im so pleased to find and join a community of believers that will help me in my journey to Jesus !

I grew up in a Heavily Roman Catholic Country, full of Superstition, Idolatrous practices, Mary Deification, and Syncretism with local pre-christian deities.

Fortunately, my Mother was wise enough to see through this Heresy, so we never took part in any of these practices, and are technically "Catholic" in-label only.

I spent most of my teen life as Agnostic and ultra-liberal. Even supporting the LGBT agenda and being Pro-Abortion at one point. I really thought i was  a  good person because im "Nice" and fought for a "noble" cause. And I really thought I can make it to heaven on my own ability (if it was real).

It wasnt until last year, due to Corona, when i was able to get in touch with  christians online, is where my life changed.

At first i was very defiant and annoyed by them. I seek the opinions of skeptics on reddit and quora to try debunk christianity or judaism. I stumbled upon CLE during that time, the first article i ever encountered was the "Ambulocetus" article
 I actively blocked alot of christians online and even bullied them. 

What really made me tick was the QnA of a believer who told an asker that theres no such thing as a "Good Person".

I was like, "How dare she!" .  But deep inside, i was beginning to feel the change within me start.

I was already starting to read certain parts of the bible out of curiosity, and i began to feel convicted of my sins. I still identified as Bisexual  , and part of the reason that scares me is the fact that i have to give up my label, my identity when i turn to Christ. "What shall i be then without this identity?" i mentally asked myself.

One day i had a very heated argument with my Mom. There was screaming, Crying and lot of hurtful words said.

Sad, Tired and Hopeless , all the bible reading suddenly "clicked" like a lightbulb. It was late that night i realized How much of a HORRIBLE person I am, and how WRONG i am on so many of my beliefs. I am NOT a good person, and i am a sinner worthy of hell. And its because of these Sins, Jesus had to die.
 
 thats where I realized how dumb i am for even questioning God's existance.
    So I prayed to God , the first time ive sincerely  prayed in years, and Cried for how truly sorry i am.  I then asked for forgiveness and finally accepted him as my Lord and Savior .

That was the beginning of my walk in Christ.

   i have since left the LGBT community, Let go of Old Grudges i had, and began to spend less time on my Phone.  Gave more time on Praying and studying scripture.
  Just last December, i discouraged my mom from setting up a Christmas tree . I in good conscience, can no longer comfortably celebrate Christmas.

Indeed i still have alot of things to learn, unlearn and grow as his follower. And now, im more watchful of the media i consume so i wont upset the Holy Spirit.

I hope i got my testimony right, but yeah!
